Google Play Store looks like it's working on a special home for your vibe-coded apps

For all the pushback you might hear about vibe coding, we can’t deny that it actually has the potential to work pretty well, and really does manage to impressively lower the bar of entry for what’s needed to build your first app. Google’s hard at working bringing its AI Studio experience to Gemini, hoping to make it easier than ever for Android users to get started coding their own apps, and now we’re learning about a new home where those apps might ultimately end up.

The Google Play Store is where we already go to learn about, download, and install Android apps, so perhaps it’s only fitting that Google seems to be considering building a special place for AI Studio apps within. Looking through version 53.2.23-34 of the Play Store for Android, we’re able to able to see Google’s early work towards building a new “Your creations” option for the app’s “Manage apps & device” screen.

As you can see, we’re clearly looking at a place for personal AI vibe-coded apps. For the moment, tapping that “Try it now” button opens up a browser and takes you to the mobile AI Studio site — presumably, we’d see that change to the Gemini app once Google finishes implementing AI Studio there, like it’s promised.

Mainly, though, we’re curious what changes this could suggest that Google is planning for how these AI Studio apps are published.

Right now, publishing AI Studio apps to the Play Store requires registration and formal testing. It’s possible this new “You creations” screen could serve as a middle ground between that and just sideloading your code, offering a polished interface for keeping track of what you’ve built.

AI Studio has already started teasing a more direct connection to the Play Store, but that’s not yet available:

What exactly will that look like, though? The “share with everyone” language sure seems to indicate that these apps will be accessible by other users, but it’s not yet clear what that would mean in terms of registration and testing. Google certainly seems to be mentioning it here as a distinct alternative to regular publication though the Play Console, but the devil’s likely in the details.

For now, it may still be too early to nail down those all-important specific, but we’ll continue to keep an eye on future Play Store updates in the hopes of working out more about Google’s plans here.
