6 new TV shows you seriously need to stream this weekend

No matter what your preferred streaming service or genre, there are tons of great TV series coming at you this weekend, June 19-21. Here are a few of the biggest new releases available to binge, either right now or in a couple of days.

The Season

All six episodes now on Hulu

This English-language show is set in Hong Kong, and initially follows a group of friends who gather to celebrate the start of the boating season. We're hanging out with the super-rich elites of the area, but Coleen (Jessie Mei Li) throws a wrench into things when she arrives from American intent on getting justice. Naturally, things spiral from there, with recriminations, plots, and deceptions aplenty.

The Season was filmed entirely on location in Hong, showcasing landmarks like Ocean Park and the Hong Kong Jockey Club. The show is designed to be a self-contained miniseries, so you can mainline all six episodes without worrying about ending on a cliffhanger.

I Will Find You

All eight episodes now on Netflix

I Will Find You is based on a book by Harlan Coben, who has built his own little empire of mystery thrillers. This new miniseries is based on his 2023 novel of the same name, about a man (Sam Worthington) falsely convicted of killing his own son. When he learns that his little boy may be still alive, he busts out of prison and uncovers a vast conspiracy.

I Will Find You seems destined to become a new binge-worthy thriller on Netflix, another tough guy odyssey as only Harlan Coben can write them. And like The Season, it's a one-and-done kind of limited series, so there will be no need to wait endlessly for a Season 2.

The Capture Season 3

All six episodes now on Peacock

The Capture is another conspiracy thriller. This one follows Rachel Carey (Holliday Grainger), a detective who specializes in cases involving deepfakes and disinformation. The show explores what it's like to live in a "post-truth" society where images and video can be easily manipulated and changed, meaning it's an up-to-the-minute kind of series. Also, Ron "Hellboy" Perlman is on hand as a high-ranking CIA agent.

The Capture usually airs episodes at a rate of one per week on BBC One. The most recent third season came out earlier this year and has a 100% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, so you know it's worth watching. And if you didn't watch it during its inital run, you're in luck, because all six episodes are now streaming on Peacock.

Sugar Season 2

Season 2 premieres on Friday, June 18 on Apple TV+

Sugar stars Colin Farrell as a hard-boiled, movie-loving detective living in modern-day Los Angeles. The second-season has John Sugar looking for the missing brother of an up-and-coming local boxer. The show is colorful, stylish, and a great example of modern noir done right.

It also has a twist so unexpected it would be a crime to reveal it here. The above trailer makes absolutely no mention of it, but it's core to the show's identity. If you want to find out what it is, you can watch Sugar Season 2 when it starts airing on Apple TV+ on Friday, June 18.

The Agency Season 2

All 10 episodes drop on Sunday, June 21 on Paramount+

Michael Fassbender stars in this remake of the French series The Bureau. He plays Brandon Colby (code-named 'Martian'), a high-ranking CIA officer who now finds himself needing to be a double agent, the result of a deal he struck at the end of Season 1 to ensure the safety of his love interest Samia (Jodie Turner-Smith). With the world-building taken care of in Season 1, it looks like the second season will plunge right into some high-stakes espionage.

The first season of The Agency came out at a rate of one episode per week, but for Season 2, all 10 episodes drop on Sunday, June 1. In addition to Fassbender, the show also stars Jeffrey Wright as Martian's boss and Richard Gere as the CIA London Station Chief, so it's a star-studded affair.

House of the Dragon Season 3

Season 3 premieres on Sunday, June 21 on HBO/HBO Max

This is probably the biggest ticket item of the weekend. House of the Dragon is a Game of Thrones prequel, the most successful of the high fantasy TV series that cropped up after HBO's phenomenally popular show ended in 2019. It tells the story of a brutal civil war fought before rival factions of the Targaryen dynasty around 100 years before the events of Game of Thrones.

The Season 3 premiere drops on HBO and HBO Max at 9:00 p.m. EST this Sunday. The premiere episode will feature a battle the likes of which has never been seen on TV before, and hopefully things will just get more interesting from there.

Catching up

If you somehow blast through all of these and have time for more, there are a few other shows that released a little too early for us to classify them as weekend binges. On Tuesday, Netflix dropped the second season of America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders, a docuseries about the lives of the women on the famous cheerleading team. And before that, on Saturday, June 13, HBO premiered the third season of the charming animated series My Adventures With Superman on HBO.

Alternatively, if none of these shows look interesting, you can always check out some of the many blockbuster movies coming our way this year.
