I spent a lot of money on a pair of Nothing Headphone (1), and then let my Google Pixel 10 Pro quietly throttle them for months without knowing. That is the frustrating part about Bluetooth audio on Android. You buy good hardware, you pair it, music plays, and everything sounds fine, so you assume the phone is doing its best. Both devices have to agree on one, and the connection settles on whichever option they share. The catch is that the phone does not always pick the best shared option, and there is a reason for that. Lower-bitrate codecs like SBC and AAC are lighter, more stable, and easier on battery for both the phone and the headphones.
A higher-bitrate codec like LDAC pushes far more data across the connection, which sounds better but stutters more easily and drains the battery faster, especially in crowded places full of wireless interference. So Android leans safe by default. Sensible for the average listener, but if you paid extra for headphones that support a hi-res codec, you are leaving the best part of them switched off.
Finding the setting on your phone
Where the codec option hides
The control lives inside Developer Options, which sounds scarier than it is. On my Pixel 10 Pro, the path to unlock it is Settings -> About phone -> Build number, tapped seven times until the phone confirms you are now a developer. On a Samsung Galaxy, the same option sits under Settings -> About phone -> Software information -> Build number.
Before you open Developer Options, connect your headphones via Bluetooth. Now, head to Settings -> System -> Developer options and scroll to the Networking section, where you will find the Bluetooth audio codec. Tap it, and the menu will show every codec your phone and your connected headphones both support.

This is where it got interesting, because the menu changes with whatever you have connected. The list only ever shows codecs your phone and your specific headphones both support, so two pairs of headphones can give you two very different sets of choices. With the Nothing Headphone (1) connected, I got the full spread: LDAC, AAC, and SBC.
My Pixel had quietly defaulted to AAC, so the very feature I paid for was sitting unused because Android decided AAC was the safer bet. I switched to LDAC, played a quiet acoustic track, and heard detail and separation I could not unhear afterward. Out of curiosity, I did the same test with a pair of XM5, which also supports LDAC alongside AAC and SBC. And the story was pretty much the same.
If your headphones support a hi-res codec, there is a decent chance your phone is not actually using it, and that is worth checking regardless of brand.
One more wrinkle to be aware of: some manufacturers ship their headphones with the high-quality codec disabled on their end. Sony gear, for instance, arrives set to prioritize a stable connection, and LDAC will not even show up in the developer menu until you flip that to prioritize sound quality inside the Sound Connect app. If LDAC is missing from a pair that should support it, check the companion app before blaming your phone.

Is it worth the effort?
For most people, honestly, maybe not every day. If you are listening to compressed streams on a noisy bus, AAC is completely fine, and LDAC might just cost you battery and the occasional dropout for a difference you will struggle to hear. But if your headphones support a hi-res codec, this setting makes your existing hardware worth what you paid for it.
I would rather know my Nothing Headphone (1) is running at its best and choose to dial things back than have my phone quietly deciding for me. That is the real value here. Not that LDAC is always better, but that you finally make the call instead of leaving it to a default you never agreed to.
