When Nvidia first launched its Multi Frame Generation (MFG), Team Green’s latest FPS-boosting breakthrough instantly made me a frame generation believer. MFG can dynamically deploy a 6x multiplier to deliver scarcely believable frame rates in titles like Cyberpunk 2077.
Yet more recently, I’ve been having major frame-gen-related issues, with some of my favorite games blighted by incredibly distracting visual glitches. It wasn't until I changed one crucial setting in the Nvidia App that I could start appreciating the AI-assisted tech once again.
What frame gen preset you use matters
If in doubt, set the Nvidia App to “Recommended”
I don’t want to overly preach and say “you must use these settings that have worked for me”. Ultimately, your PC setup has most likely been tailored to meet your highly bespoke needs, just as the rig I build#t services mine. If you are suffering from frame gen glitches, though, all I can tell you is that the following method helped me out.
Via the Nvidia app, Team Green gives you three options when it comes to frame generation: “Recommended”, “Preset A”, and “Preset B”. Shortly after MFG launched, I was having a lot of success with the latter, particularly in Cyberpunk. So much so, I was comfortably hitting over 200 FPS on my 1440p super ultrawide monitor with every graphical slider maxed out.
It turns out, Preset B is actually the most aggressive form of frame gen. Sure, it provides extra smoothness, yet from my testing, it comes at a cost that’s too high to pay. By pushing intermediate, AI-generated frames more than Preset A, the setting I plumped for has caused me all sorts of issues.
While your experience may well differ from mine, using frame gen Preset B has caused the sort of traditional single-player games that I love huge amounts of hassle. I have suffered through major ghosting issues in a variety of titles this year since MFG launched, and the only fix to horrible in-game shimmering effects was to set my games to either the Recommended or Preset A sliders through the Nvidia app.
Since I’ve made this change, those ghosting problems have thankfully been thoroughly busted.
How to spot frame generation issues
The most aggressive form of frame gen can boost smoothness, but at a cost
I have a fast and easy solution for weeding out frame generation glitches. Pick a game with visible HUD elements, turn on frame gen, then pan the camera around your character (or in the case of Forza Horizon 6, whatever vehicle you’re driving).
From my experience, HUD features (like hovering in-game icons) expose frame gen ghosting more than any other onscreen graphical element. Take my recent problems with 007: First Light. Aside from those shimmering champagne classes that appear to be fluctuating between different dimensions, it’s the mission markers that constantly pop up in Bond’s environment that are the most reliable visual tells of frame gen hiccups.
Sometimes, it’s even more obvious than James’ distracting champers flutes. When I was accidentally forcing Hogwarts Legacy to use Nvidia’s Preset B, every step I took as a bespectacled wizard in waiting would cause massive onscreen ripples. Though First Light’s ghosting is distracting if you’re not using Preset A, Legacy takes things to an entirely different, eye-offending level. Using the wrong frame gen setting in Avalanche Software’s broom-riding action adventure can legitimately make the magical action unplayable.
If you find yourself staring at distracting visual artifacts when frame gen is enabled in select titles, your first port of call should be to always jump into the Nvidia app and switch up your presets.
Modern games need frame gen
Like it or not, this AI-bolstered feature isn’t going anywhere
I absolutely get why a lot of PC gamers don’t like frame generation. Take AI “fake frame” snobbery out of the equation, and the added input lag Nvidia’s tech can force upon certain titles isn’t worth the boosted FPS numbers. The people that keep dismissing frame generation are missing the point, though. Well… at least to some degree.
The GPU market has been in a holding pattern ever since Nvidia launched its RTX 50 Series in early 2025. Almost 18 months on from the release of the RTX 5090, there’s absolutely no evidence that a 6090 is going to come out anytime soon at time of writing.
Thanks to the global, AI data center-influenced component crisis, graphics cards have become prohibitively expensive to manufacture. That’s a big reason why a 5090 currently costs upwards of $3,500 as I type this, despite the fact its “official” MSRP is $1,999. With advances in GPU hardware stalling, developers are being increasingly forced to use frame generation to deliver responsive experiences for those who crave high-end 4K gaming.
Frame generation has become an unavoidable crutch for PC players who want 4K/120 FPS gameplay. Despite the best efforts of DLSS, ray tracing — let alone the incredibly expensive but amazing-looking path tracing — is incredibly taxing on GPU resources. Ignoring frame gen in graphically-demanding games like Resident Evil Requiem can massively hobble performance.
I dearly wish ray tracing features were cheaper to run. But now that I’ve experienced how much better RT looks compared to traditional rasterization methods in Leon’s latest survival horror or Crimson Desert, there’s no going back. I simply have to keep using frame gen to feed my unquenchable appetite for the most cutting-edge visual experiences at console-beating frame rates.
Frame generation can be transformative, just ensure you’re using the right settings
When Nvidia’s frame gen works, hoo-boy does it really work. At its best, it allows me to enjoy my favorite games in 4K at 120 frames per second with full ray tracing enabled. Yet as I’ve recently realized, you need to be diligent about what frame gen preset you use via Team Green’s app. The moment you start seeing horrible ghosting effects once you switch on frame gen features, your best bet is to switch presets in the iconic GPU maker’s’ problem-solving software.
