Installing Linux on a laptop is easy enough now that I’m far more interested in what happens after the installer disappears. Wi-Fi should connect, suspend should wake back up, the webcam should behave, and plugging into a dock shouldn’t stress me.

The harder part is knowing which laptops will actually behave that way before you buy one. A spec sheet can tell you the processor and ports, but it rarely tells you whether the fingerprint reader works under Linux or if a routine suspend will turn into a forum search. Hardware compatibility can still be one of Linux’s lingering dealbreakers, which is why some machines remove much more uncertainty than others.

Framework publishes a Linux compatibility table for each Laptop 13 generation, so you can see what works before choosing a distro. On the Ryzen AI 300 model, Fedora 43, Ubuntu 25.10, and Bazzite are officially supported, with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and the fingerprint reader working out of the box. Framework still officially supports Fedora and Ubuntu on the older Ryzen 7040, including Ubuntu 24.04.

Both AMD generations use integrated Radeon graphics supported through the kernel and Mesa, so there is no separate proprietary graphics driver to maintain. Framework also distributes BIOS updates via LVFS, so fwupd can handle firmware updates directly from Linux.

I'd buy the Ryzen AI 300 version today, although the 7040 model is still worth considering if you find one at a good price.

System76 Lemur Pro

The current Lemur Pro ships with Pop!_OS 24.04, Ubuntu 24.04, or Ubuntu 26.04, and System76 supports Linux as the factory operating system. The 14-inch model also sticks with Intel integrated graphics, which keeps the graphics setup simple and avoids adding an NVIDIA driver to a laptop built mainly around portability and battery life.

System76 handles some of the lower-level hardware itself too. Lemur Pro models from lemp9 onward support the company's open firmware and open embedded-controller firmware, with the latter responsible for hardware including the keyboard, touchpad, and power button. Firmware updates can also be installed from Linux using System76's own updater.

If you're a developer who wants to buy a laptop, install your tools, and get on with work, having the hardware, firmware, and Linux support under the same roof removes quite a few variables.

Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 6 AMD

The corporate workhorse has official Linux credentials

ThinkPads have been popular with Linux users for years, but compatibility can change enough between generations that I wouldn't buy one on reputation alone. Canonical lists the ThinkPad T14 Gen 6 AMD among its Ubuntu-certified laptops, giving this particular generation a much firmer footing than the usual forum consensus.

The AMD configuration uses integrated Radeon graphics and keeps the basic hardware fairly conventional. You still get Ethernet and plenty of USB-C connectivity for docking, without adding a discrete NVIDIA GPU to the mix.

I would pay attention to the exact configuration before ordering. Cameras, WWAN modules, fingerprint readers, and wireless hardware can vary within a single ThinkPad generation, so the closer you stick to a certified configuration, the fewer assumptions you make about Linux support.

Dell XPS 13 9350

Dell has several XPS 13 9350 configurations certified for Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, including models built around Core Ultra 5, Ultra 7, and Ultra 9 processors. Canonical's database also lists configurations with Intel Lunar Lake graphics and Intel BE201 wireless hardware, which gives you an exact combination to look for when buying.

The Intel hardware keeps most of the important components within well-established Linux driver stacks, while Canonical certification gives you a fully tested Ubuntu configuration rather than just a compatible processor and Wi-Fi card. Canonical lists the ambient light sensor as unsupported for the Core Ultra 5 configuration.

I'd take the 9350 over the older 9340 if the prices are close. You get newer Lunar Lake hardware while keeping the Ubuntu certification that made the Intel XPS line worth considering in the first place.

Kubuntu Focus Ar Gen 1

The laptop where software updates are part of hardware support

Kubuntu Focus does more than ship Linux on the Ar Gen 1. The company validates kernel, graphics, desktop, and major software updates against its hardware before rolling them into its supported setup. The Ar Gen 1 ships with Kubuntu 26.04 LTS and, as of the time of writing, is estimated to receive that validation through 2030.

The hardware is built around Intel Panther Lake with integrated Arc B390 graphics, Thunderbolt 4, and the usual laptop hardware, already configured for the Kubuntu Focus stack. The company also tests things such as suspend and resume, external displays, power management, and kernel updates as part of its ongoing validation process, which matters when even getting a multi-monitor Linux setup working smoothly can otherwise require some configuration.

That kind of testing can catch subtle problems, since Linux laptop fan problems can come from the power-management stack rather than anything physically wrong with the cooling hardware.

The trade-off is distro choice. You get the strongest support by staying with Kubuntu Focus's own installation, but if KDE and Ubuntu already suit you, this is about as close as Linux laptops get to buying a known software-and-hardware combination.

HP ZBook 8 G2a

HP doesn't market the ZBook 8 G2a as a Linux enthusiast laptop, but Canonical's certification database makes a strong case for the 14-inch AMD model anyway. Ubuntu 24.04-certified configurations include Ryzen AI 5 PRO 435, Ryzen AI 7 PRO 450, and Ryzen AI 9 HX PRO 470 processors, all paired with integrated Radeon graphics.

Some certified configurations also use MediaTek MT7922 wireless hardware, so you're not relying on a vague assumption that any ZBook with the same chassis will behave the same way. You can match the processor and wireless configuration against Canonical's database before buying.

Canonical notes a minor exception with the Ryzen AI 5 configuration: the ambient light sensor can stop updating after several hours, so automatic brightness isn't quite as bulletproof as the core hardware.

This is the one I'd look at if you want something closer to a traditional mobile workstation than the Framework or Lemur Pro. It gives you mainstream business hardware, an all-AMD graphics path, and a current Ubuntu certification without requiring you to buy from a Linux-only manufacturer.

Good Linux hardware should be boring

You can install Linux on a wide range of laptops, but the experience gets easier when the manufacturer has already paid attention to the hardware underneath. Wi-Fi chipsets, webcams, firmware, graphics, and suspend behavior can affect your day far more than the logo stamped on the lid.

If you're buying specifically for Linux, check whether a laptop will actually run Linux properly before buying it, then verify the exact configuration rather than relying on the laptop family's reputation. Look for reports from people using the distribution you intend to install, and pay attention to the smaller hardware features instead of stopping once Wi-Fi and graphics are confirmed.

Once the hardware lines up, there isn't much of a story anymore. You install Linux, start using the laptop, and save the tinkering for something you actually wanted to tinker with.
