Smartphones have been evolving over the years, becoming more powerful. They have built-in cameras that rival DSLRs, integrated AI, amped-up processors, and larger, more efficient batteries in slimmer designs. But this comes at the expense of some features that we used to rely on. Options like microSD card slots and headphone jacks are rarer than ever on smartphones. Though that's for good reason. Along with allowing for a sleeker, more seamless exterior design without these ports, when you don't have expandable storage, you're more likely to opt for a more expensive, higher-storage-capacity phone, rely on cloud storage, or both. As for the headphone jack, most of us now use wireless headphones, anyway. To use a wired pair, you can usually get audio output from the USB-C port using USB-C headphones or a traditional pair with a 3.5mm-to-USB-C adapter, one of the essential USB-C travel accessories.
All that said, there are still some brands and phones that continue to support these once-essential but now-archaic features and ports. Note that these options are new phones; you can also find older-model phones still in circulation with a microSD card slot and a headphone jack. I have also included a few newer phones that don't have a traditional 3.5mm headphone jack but do have a microSD card slot and support audio output through the USB-C port.
How Much Storage Do You Need in a Smartphone?
Higher storage is better for smartphones, but is it worth the hefty premium? And will you really use all of that storage space?
Motorola's entry and mid-range phones
Expand storage, plug in headphones
Motorola is one of the few brands left that continues to support both the microSD card slot and headphone jack in many of its phones. The Moto G 2026 is an entry-level phone that has both a headset jack and a microSD card slot. The affordable device only comes with 128GB of storage, so you'll need an optional memory card to store more than that. It's a great first phone for a teen or tween, or a good option for a light user. The Moto G Power 2026, another entry-level phone with an impressive battery that lasts up to 49 hours per charge, also has a 3.5mm headphone jack and microSD card slot.
The Moto G Stylus 2026 is another option with a microSD card slot for up to 1TB of storage and a headphone jack for audio playback. Considered a mid-range phone, it comes with, as the name implies, a stylus for easier navigation, sketching, note-taking, and more on the touchscreen. It comes with either 128GB or 256GB built-in storage and tons of AI-powered features. Ultra-durable as well, meeting both IP68 and IP69 dust and water resistance ratings, it's a great phone for the average user.

The Motorola moto g 2026 is ultra-affordable and comes with both a headphone jack and microSD card slot. With plenty of AI power and 5G performance, it lasts for days and charges quickly so you can get back up and running in no time.
Samsung Galaxy entry options
microSD port, USB-C for audio output
Like other brands, Samsung has done away with the headphone jack and microSD card slot in its latest premium devices. But some of the entry options still have a card slot and can support wired headphones. The Samsung Galaxy A35 5G has 128GB of built-in storage, but you can expand it up to 1TB with a microSD card. The durable, mid-range phone doesn’t have a headphone jack, but like with many other new devices, you can use the USB-C port for audio output. It has a 6.6-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, an octa-core processor, and a battery that lasts up to two days.
The Samsung Galaxy A55 is another phone with a microSD card slot and support for audio output through its USB-C port via a traditional 3.5mm headphone jack. The mid-range phone offers AI features like Circle to Search, comes in cool colors, and features a 6.6-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED display. It's great for budget-conscious customers who don't need top-of-the-line specs. A few other recent Galaxy A series phones have both, including the Galaxy A26 and Galaxy A17, both of which support a card up to 2TB and have a USB-C earjack.
Samsung Galaxy A55 5G
Samsung's A series phones are its affordable line, and the Galaxy A55 boasts Awesome Intelligence alongside a dual SIM design. It can connect to wired headphones via the USB-C port and has a microSD card slot for loading the phone up with downloaded movies, music, podcasts, and more.
CMF Nothing Phone 2 Pro
Sleek and unique design
This minimalist phone, like the Samsung models, has a microSD card slot but no 3.5mm headphone jack. However, you can use the USB-C port for audio output with an adapter. The phone comes with either 128GB or 256GB built-in storage, a MediaTek Dimensity 7300 processor, and a stylish design.
Running Nothing OS 3.0, a defining feature is Essential Space, whereby AI organizes content to help you stay on top of things and provides personalized suggestions, whether it's for an outing, vacation, work, or school project, and more.
Sony Xperia 1 VII
Yes, they still make phones
While the phones aren't sold in all markets, the Sony Xperia 1 VII is available in markets like the U.K. and has both a microSD card slot and a headphone jack. Available with 256GB built-in storage, you can expand this with a microSDXC card that's up to 2TB in capacity, a huge advantage. While the price of memory is going up, even with the addition of a memory card, you may end up coming out ahead, since most premium phones don't offer built-in storage of up to 2TB.
The 3.5mm audio jack, meanwhile, makes it easy to plug in wired headphones or earbuds, which are coming back in style with the new generation. You can also plug in wireless headphones that come with a cable and use them this way once the battery runs out. It runs on a Snapdragon 8 Elite processor with Android 15 out of the box, and supports up to four OS upgrades and six years of security updates.
TCL 60 XE NxtPaper
Easy on the eyes
TCL's NxtPaper line of phones is designed as an affordable, easy-on-the-eyes option, thanks to a greyscale screen that mimics the look of an eReader when you want to reduce distractions and eye strain. It runs on a MediaTek Dimensity 6100 Plus processor and comes with Android 15 and TCL UI v8. Notably, you can pop in a microSD card to store up to 2TB of additional data.
There's also a separate 3.5mm audio jack for headphones, so you can watch movies on the 6.8-inch FHD+ display or listen to audiobooks without connecting wirelessly. While some people don't miss the headphone jack, it's a worthy option if you're looking for something different from the usual top brands.

It's a great phone if you want to limit distractions and give your eyes a break with the Ink Paper Mode and anti-glare display. Ideal for reading eBooks, when you want audio for audiobooks, music, and more, use the 3.5mm headphone jack, a rarity in phones nowadays.
Ulephone Armor 28 Ultra
A rugged work phone
Ulephone is known for its rugged phones for those who work in the field, and the Armor 28 Ultra is one of the latest models to retain both a 3.5mm headphone jack and a microSD card slot. Running the MediaTek Dimension 9300+ processor and boasting IP68 and IP69 certification while meeting MIL-STD-810H standards for drop protection as well, it's meant to be used in places where you need an ultra-rugged, powerful phone that can withstand the elements and getting knocked around.
You get Android 15 and features like 120W flash charging, a triple-camera main system, and an AMOLED dual-screen, including a small watch subscreen on the back for at-a-glance time and date information. It's also AI-enabled and supports Wi-Fi 7. Along with 1TB of flash storage, you can expand this up to 2TB with a microSD card.
Ulephoe Armor 28 Ultra
Expand the storage in this phone up to 2TB, useful since you can take and use it virtually anywhere thanks to its IP68 and IP69 dust and water-resistant rating. Great for field workers, you can pop in a pair of wired headphones using the 3.5mm jack, too.
Still useful
The trade-off is up to you
Having both expandable storage and a built-in headphone jack is useful, but they are less essential now. With the price of memory going up, however, phones with more built-in storage represent a larger price delta. That makes the option to use a microSD card you already have lying around attractive for expanding storage and avoiding the added fees of cloud subscriptions.
When it comes to the 3.5mm headphone jack, it's useful, but some prefer the sleeker design without one. You can always pick up a cheap adapter and leverage the USB-C port for audio output if it supports that. Almost all modern phones do, including the iPhone. If you only have old wired headphones or prefer to use that method, you might want to invest in a phone that has a port built in for easy connectivity. These models fit the bill, some with USB-C for wired listening. You may find a few other models I missed that are available in other countries or are older options.
